Later this week, Augustana College opens its door to the entire Rock Island community and beyond for their annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  This festive event is scheduled for Saturday, January 19th, 2013 at 6PM in Centennial Hall and will feature motivational speakers, numerous local choral groups, and plenty of dancing for all those in attendance.  There is no admission cost for this event and this year’s theme focuses on Dr. King’s infamous quote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Mark A. Anderson, assistant dean of students at Augustana, says that this annual event is scheduled not to mark the passing of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but to celebrate his vast accomplishments in life with his inspirational speeches and other strides towards non-violent change.  He hopes that everyone in the local community will make plans to attend this event because hundreds of individuals, businesses, and other colleges have come together to make it a special tribute where everyone throughout the quad cities can have a good time.

“Centennial Hall provides a unique venue that allows the Quad-Cities community the opportunity to join together in commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. King,” added Mr. Anderson.

Some of the choirs and dancers that are scheduled to perform are the Westbrook Singers, the Community Gospel Chorus, Augustana’s Gospel Choir, and the Truth Temple and Pentecostal Church of God Praise Dancers.  A special benediction will also be delivered by Reverend Dwight Ford, who is the director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center right here in Rock Island.  This annual event promises to be an evening packed with family fun and loving remembrance for everyone in attendance so prepare to arrive early.  Directions to Centennial Hall can be found here.

Augustana College is a private liberal arts college that is located near the Mississippi River on a beautiful 115 acre campus in the town of Rock Island, Illinois.  It has an average of 2,500 students enrolled annually that study everything from Art Education to Pre Law and Engineering.  Augustana was founded in 1860 and boasts over 25,000 successful alumni that are employed throughout the US and abroad.
